There are a few bands I have wanted to check out from seeing this list and other recommendations. A couple on your list were Blitzen Trapper and TV on the Radio. A few other artists not on the list that I've heard songs from that I have liked this year have been the Heligoats, Blind Pilot, and Sun Kil Moon. You should check these bands out. I have a lot of listening to do!
Great list Jarrett! I'll definitely be checking out the Alopecia one, had heard of them but never picked it up. Probably lots of others too. Seems like I discover most of my music from these year-end lists.
I did get the Sun Kil Moon this year. I liked it, but it never really hit me that strongly. I'll give it another shot or two. I love his other stuff.
I have heard of Blind Pilot. I'll check 'em out.
Another interesting band is "Vampire Weekend." I've enjoyed the CD a lot so far. It's unlike anything I have ever heard of. I also wanted to get an explanation on why Scarlett Johansson is on this list. I haven't actually listened to it, but I can imagine.
I did enjoy Vampire Weekend this year, although it took the whole year for me to finally buy into the idea of the album as a whole, which is why it didn't make the list. Maybe it should have.
I really appreciated the shoegazing, Cocteau Twins-style of the Johansson album. Most people panned it, and I get why. I'm a sucker sometimes.
Listen to Dr. Dog, "Fate", from front to back, and then, go and see them Live.. They are very laid-back, have stayed out of most of the media, and therefore, never got the recognition they deserved for this great c.d. Check out their YouTube videos. They have been on Letterman, Conan, etc., a few times, and even have a couple of songs on movie tracks, but, they have been on a world tour, were the cover story on Relix Mag. this year as "America's Next Greatest Band", yet, love touring live and playing small venues/bars, and are easily overlooked. Great song writing.. 2 lead singers, both so totally different, and switch and play many different instruments. A couple of them have been, quietly, lending a hand and helping to produce some new musician's c.d.s, also. Check them out, as they don't "toot their own horn". Many people are just discovering them. They have been together for years, quietly, and let their fans lead the way instead of being media mongers, like many other bands that are actually imitating them and their style of music, dress, etc., right now.
